When you get your SHOUTcast Stream Host account and depending on what package you select, you will be allowed to stream up to a certain bitrate.

For example, if you purchase a 128 Kbps stream host provider package, that means that you cannot stream above that bitrate. You can stream at 128 Kbps, 96 Kbps, 64 Kbps, 32 Kbps or less. A 128 Kbps package means that it is the highest you can stream at. Most Internet radio stations that play music, stream at 128 Kbps. If you will have a talks show, 32 Kbps is OK. You can even get away with streaming music at 64 Kbps.

Most people cannot tell the difference between a stream at 96 Kbps and 128 Kbps.

If you stream at a bitrate higher than your Stream Host package allows, it will crash the host account server and you lose your stream. So make sure your songs are at a bitrate less than or equal to what your Stream Host Provider Package allows.

You should also understand that streaming at exorbitant bitrates such as 256 Kbps or more could actually hurt you. How so? Suppose you purchase a Stream Host Package that allows you to stream at this level. No problem! You will sound great! But is there anyone else out there listening to your stream? You must take into account the Internet connections of your listeners. Some persons have slow Internet connections and others have fast ones. If their personal home Internet connections have a bandwidth of say 64 Kbps, your station will come in choppy and will buffer. They will not have a smooth stream.

I find that most persons are able to smoothly pick up Internet radio stations streaming music at 96 Kbps to 128 Kbps.

When you purchase MP3 songs – depending upon where you purchase them – you will find that they will be at bitrates higher than your Stream Host Provider allows. You you need a way to reduce the bitrates.
