A client hired us to acquire Branch.com in 2017. Five years later, we completed the acquisition—but for an entirely unrelated buyer.

The hardest part wasn’t negotiating the price. It was discovering who controlled the domain and establishing a reliable way to reach them.

Facebook had acquired the team behind the original Branch company, but Branch.com wasn’t included. That left behind an unclear ownership trail, unanswered contact forms and years of research.

Between June 2018 and April 2020 alone, our records document at least 67 attempts to make contact. Many additional attempts were never formally logged.

By then, the original client had independently chosen a different branding direction, no longer wanted Branch.com and formally ended its pursuit.

Years later, an unrelated insurance company operating on OurBranch.com approached Lumis. By that point, the years spent solving the ownership mystery had become the most valuable part of the acquisition.

This is the complete story—and what it teaches us about domain ownership, timing, informed persistence and the work that happens before a negotiation can even begin.
