In this video, I will show you how you can convert a text file or a .rtf file into a corresponding audio file that you can play in iTunes, iPod or on any device with some audio player.

For this purpose, I will be using TextEdit, a simple, open source word processor and text editor built into Mac OS X (meaning you don’t have to install it, it’s already installed). This software includes a text to speech feature that will read back any text you type into the editor. Using the Services feature built into Mac OS X, you can use the text to speech built into TextEdit to create a recording of your text you can play in iTunes or on your iPod. And, you can also extract that audio file and take it to any device or machine and play it back with any audio player that accepts MP4 file.

Please remember that the text that you want to convert to speech can be either typed directly on the editor or uploaded from files with formats or extensions such as .txt or .rtf etc. For example, I can type the text right here, or can upload it from a text file like this. You can try other kind of files as well. Now I have this text and I will show you how I can make it into speech and then have it in a MP4 file. So, let’s proceed.

To use Services to create a recording of a text file, please do the following:

Open TextEdit and go to the TextEdit menu. Next, choose Services, and click Services Preferences. This will open the Keyboard Shortcuts pane of the Keyboard preferences.
With Services selected on the left side of the pane, scroll down on the right side of the window and check the box next to the Text  category.
After that, close the Keyboard preferences window.
Now, Select the text for your recording in TextEdit and go to the TextEdit menu, and select Services, Add to iTunes as a Spoken Track. iTunes will open in the background and your recording will show up in an album called Text to Speech (or you can also give it a name by changing ‘Text to Speech’ in the ‘Save As’ field to any name of your choice)). Double-click on this album to open it and play your recording.
To extract the album as the MP4 file to any other folder/directory on your machine, simply drag and drop it to the folder of your choice. Not to have duplicate copy of the audio file, you may want to delete the one in the iTunes library.
Note that, you can also locate the file in ITunes by using the Finder and then handle it or move it around to your places of choice.
For this purpose Make sure that you're in Finder. From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose Go menu and then go to Home, Music, iTunes and further down the subfolders. In my case I could locate the just created audio file at iTunes, iTunesMedia, Music, Unknown Artist, Unknown Album.
If you prefer not to record the recitation of the text, rather you just want to hear it, then, you take the following simple steps.

Choose the text to be recited. You can select part or all of the text available on the editor.

Go to the Edit menu and select Speech, Start Speaking. That will start the speech.

When you want to stop the speech, you can choose the same Edit menu and go and select Speech, Stop Speaking.
