1971年にリリースされた この曲を書いたのは、デンバーの 友人である ビル・ダノフと 彼の妻タフィー・ダノフ夫婦。彼ら２人が メリーランド州からウエストバージニア州に続く 田舎街道 (Cropper Road)を運転していた時に この曲は生まれた。

後に デンバーも加わり、曲を仕上げた時、デンバーは ヒット曲を 手にしたことを 確信した。彼は 友人夫婦を連れて ニューヨークに行き、一緒に録音した。バック・グラウンド・ボーカルは ビルとタフィーの声です。

The song was released in 1971, written by Denver's friend Bill Danoff and his wife Taffy Danoff. The song was born when the couple was driving on the Cropper Road, which runs from Maryland into West Virginia.

Later, Denver helped to finish the song. When the song was finished, Denver was convinced that he had a hit. He went to New York with the couple and recorded with them. Background vocals are the voices of Bill and Taffy.

After recording, Denver continued to push RCA Records to promote "Country Road." His tenacity paid off, and in the summer song was a huge hit, became Denver's first hit and reached number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in August 1971.

March 2014, this song became one of the four official state anthems of the state.

By the way, Denver, Bill, and Taffy, who composed the song, had never been to West Virginia.
