We didn't wash these shirts or wear them for a month. We pulled the spec on every one — the fabric weight, the cotton, the seams — because the numbers don't lie. And the numbers say your fast-fashion tee, thin open-end cotton under 150 grams, is a disposable dressed up as a shirt. We read the spec on t-shirts from Walmart, Target, Costco and eight more stores. These failed.

We read the weight, not the logo. One number decides whether a t-shirt survives the summer, and it's almost never on the front label: GSM, the fabric weight. Under 150 is see-through and disposable. 180 to 200 is a real everyday shirt. 205 and up is heavyweight that lasts years. But weight is only the first number. Combed ring-spun cotton beats cheap open-end that pills and feels like cardboard, Supima wins on yarn even at a lighter weight, and a side-seamed body holds its shape while a tubular one twists into a crop top after a few washes. Read the tag, not the price.

The failures: fast fashion — H&M, Shein, the thinnest Zara basics — sub-150 GSM open-end cotton, tubular, see-through. Old Navy's thin basics that lose shape by next summer. And the premium fashion tee that charges thirty to fifty dollars for the same thin cotton as a disposable, with all the markup in the logo. The price tag is not the spec.

The honest cheap blanks, credited for being exactly what they claim: Gildan (buy the Ultra Cotton, not the Softstyle), Hanes (the Beefy-T is a real 200-gram heavyweight), and Fruit of the Loom (an honest undershirt multipack). The winners: Target Goodfellow, the better Walmart lines like Free Assembly, Amazon Essentials, Uniqlo Supima (the best on the yarn, not the scale), and the champion — Costco Kirkland Signature: 100% combed cotton, around 205 grams, reinforced seams, at roughly three dollars a shirt. The weight never lies.
